Karima Francis - Wherever I Go - New Single Set for Release on May 28

There is an extraordinary line on ‘Glory Days’, the poignant, rousing centre-piece of Karima Francis’s album, ‘The Remedy’, that tells the audience, in just a few words, where the Blackpool singer-songwriter is coming from. “They are weak but strong,” she sings, “Who fail but carry on.”

And this new single [ Wherever I Go ] [In memory of Stuart Logan] demonstrates the constant endeavours of those- like Karima Francis- who carry on, yet are feeling ground down by the rigours of the journey.

Cheerful bumpy vibes accompany the pastel-flavoured verse... and these lead to a shaky yet piquantly humming chorus. Making it up to us, Karima sings that when she is “Not at home - (She) is still here loving you...” And this is as personal a testimony as she can possibly give- perhaps expanding on life away- away on the road, away from your heart, and away from your mind...

Tender, wispy and ultimately bittersweet. Laden with memories and feeling.

Triumph of the Band from South of the City

It’s looking like a great year for British Blues! What with Eric Bibb and Elkie Brooks at Ashburton. Robert Cray and Van Morrison in London. Chris Farlowe and Cliff Bennett at Maryport, and Robin Trower and Connie Lush at Cleethorpes. But along with all these big names, some shining new homegrown talent can be seen rising to the top slots.

One example is the up and coming blues-rock band ALBANY DOWN who played a scorching set at this years Burnley International Rock and Blues Festival - earning themselves a bunch of delighted new fans.

Supporting the legendary guitarist Jimmy Vaughan on the main stage at the BURNLEY MECHANICS venue, the band zipped through a highly polished set that included some of their own freshly penned numbers, along with several songs selected from their very successful ‘South of the City’ Album ( produced last year by Greg Haver.)

Their sharp melodies, neurotic lyrics, road rolling percussion and whip cracking bursts of guitar have all helped to establish this band as a tour de force to be reckoned with on the stage of British blues. Sounding like the marsh-born sons of the Rolling Stones, their blues based heritage shone through each number on their Burnley set.

Songs like ‘Save Me’ - shot into the crowd with a glossy cool, clear-headed deliverance, laced with passionate vocals from Paul Muir and resplendent with razor-sharp hooks of guitar from Paul Turley. With haunting rhythms produced by Damien Campbell on drums and Billy Dedman on bass, this soon had the crowd clapping along.

Albany Down’s stage presentation is more elegant than a city-boys crisply starched shirt. And as sure as a chancellors swagger. You never feel that the music goes it’s own way. It is always tightly reigned in. And is constantly refined by these clever musicians.

Finishing off the set with their highly accomplished ‘South of the City’ number, with its sweaty, hazy summery-blues heat, and those mosquito stinging lyrics ... adorned with a gloriously serpentine bottle-neck guitar finale, this song suitably topped off a magnificent show for the band .... scoring them a hit with the blues fans at Burnley .... and preparing the ground for Jimmie and his famous Tilt a Whirl.

Sibling Rivalry and Flying Vulvas - Haim Live at The Great Escape

Haim Live at The Audio

There is no doubt at all that these L.A. based girls have earned their stripes working their spice in backdoor entry sticky clubs and lowdown bars from way up in Augusta to way down in Austin. But I doubt that when they worked the rooms back then (with Mama Haim and Papa Haim) they were as raunchy as we found them in Brighton.

“That’s right motherf*** hit the drum - that ‘ll teach *** son of a bitch” screamed Este - because her drum was ‘”f**ing about’”. Yes this is is spunked out rock. Pungent, sweaty and vulgar. It is real.

“F *** it’s hot up here - can I just get naked now? I’ll show you ... there will be boobs and vulvas flying everywhere ...”

Tribal beats play a significant role in their show in general and in the sound of Haim. And this is a spectacle. The sisters are hypnotic. They are aligned along a long stage at ‘The Audio’ Brighton (Great Escape 2012) and this is because they need the space to flex- to play about with their drums and their guitars. Yet even with all this space between them, they sound ‘as one’ - unified. Family. The echoes of chanting lyrics create absorbing patchworks of sound - often forming aural backdrops for chiming guitar licks that seemed smeared across the sounds, before resonating around the walls. My, this is loud stuff. It is like polished punk.

And always the best part of each catchy Haim song is the jubilant chord arrangement. You feel that you should try to catch each one before it pulls you off of your feet. ‘Better Off’ has a sweetish a cappella start, before the booming drums start to thrum - played by the girls - and supported by the only guy in the group- Dash Hutton (who seems kinda superfluous) but, as Este points out “ He’s just here to give us the horn.” This song seems to have been inspired by the work of Christine McVie circa 1976 (“You Make Loving Fun” era.) A bass-line nags and whirrs like an angry hornet, as the chorus grows more and more prominent, before mushrooming into a cluster-cloud of fantasy chimes.

‘Forever’ has more of the same vibe, a bouncy bass provided by the ever orgasmically faced Este, while Alana blips and cuts away at the keys and Danielle blasts out the main lines. This song is a blend of country jangles and Fleetwood Mac style light-blues guitar. And I swear that this will transport you back to a better place and time (if ever you were there.) It will also propel you forward with its magnificent power chords and turbulent percussion. The real strength of this band is in their vocal energy -played out for you and for everyone on stage. They out perform each other at every given opportunity. It is sibling rivalry gone musically mad. Swapping lead vocals, incidental harmonising and adding accidentally random textures.

If you put all this together and then add their uncommon instrumental prowess with their masterful tune writing, the resultant mix is quite phenomenal. In their final moments, as the sisters drum out in style, I cannot help but think that we have not heard or seen the best of them yet!

Toots and the Maytals to Headline Sunday at The Beacons Festival

Beacons Festival have just announced that Toots and the Maytals are confirmed as Sunday’s headliner on the Stool Pigeon stage. Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply

The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.

Toots and the Maytals remains a relevant influence on today’s global music scene with artists from Amy Winehouse to Sublime re-recording classic tracks. Toots recieved another Grammy nomination for his 2008 release “Light Your Light".

In recent years Toots has toured with The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow and Los Lonely Boys. Toots isn’t just about nostalgia, though; he continues to record and release new music, bringing sunshine everywhere he performs.

On the newest recording ‘Flip & Twist’ he delves into those early influences, creating a record that’s as much 1960s Detroit or Muscle Shoals as it is Kingston, Jamaica.
